Mammals on Monday-Gunnison’s Prairie Dogs

I had to make a quick trip to Taos, New Mexico this weekend to take care of some business. While I was there I was delighted to see a colony of Gunnison’s Prairie Dogs chasing each other around in an empty field. The Gunnison’s Prairie Dog has a much shorter tail than other prairie dogs and is found around the Four Corners area of the American Southwest from 5,000-11,000 feet. Their coloring is unique among prairie dogs in that the upper head, sides of the cheeks, and eyebrows are distinctly darker than the rest of the body.
